Caldera de Taburiente National Park occupies the northern part of La Palma in Spain's Canary Islands and was designated a national park in 1954. Its centerpiece is the Caldera de Taburiente, a depression roughly 10 kilometers across whose walls rise as much as 2,000 meters above the valley floor, formed by a massive landslide that collapsed the flank of the Northern Shield volcano about 525,000 years ago rather than by a volcanic crater collapse. The highest point, Roque de los Muchachos at 2,426 meters, is reachable by road and hosts the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory nearby. The caldera's geological importance led the International Union of Geological Sciences to name it one of its 100 global geological heritage sites in 2022, and the park is also recognized as an Important Bird Area for its laurel pigeons, red-billed choughs, and Atlantic canaries amid forests of Canary Island pine and endangered Canary Islands juniper.
