Peak District National Park protects most of the Peak District, an upland area in central-northern England at the southern end of the Pennines, chiefly in Derbyshire but extending into Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, and South and West Yorkshire. Designated in 1951 as the first national park created in the United Kingdom, it is divided between the Dark Peak, moorland dominated by gritstone that arcs across the district's north, east and west, and the White Peak, a limestone area of valleys and gorges at its center and south, with Kinder Scout as its highest point. Like the United Kingdom's other national parks, it is managed as a lived-in landscape balancing farming, settlement and public access rather than as an uninhabited wilderness.
