Hardangervidda National Park is Norway's largest national park, covering 3,422 square kilometers of the Hardanger mountain plateau across Buskerud, Vestland and Telemark counties. Established in 1981 at an average elevation of 1,100 meters, it forms Europe's largest peneplain, an eroded upland of barren, treeless moorland dotted with lakes and streams, wetter and rockier in the west and drier and more vegetated in the east. The plateau supports some of the world's largest wild reindeer herds, numbering around 8,000 animals, and the southernmost populations of several arctic species in Europe, and its long history of Stone Age settlement now shares the landscape with hikers, skiers, anglers and climbers.
