Awash National Park, established in 1966 on the border of Ethiopia's Oromia and Afar states about 225 kilometers east of Addis Ababa, protects acacia woodland, grassland and riverine wetland across roughly 827 to 850 square kilometers and is known for its rich biodiversity and rural landscapes. The park includes Mount Fentale, a dormant stratovolcano rising to 2,007 meters, the Awash River with its waterfalls and gorges, and the hot springs at Filwoha, set among palm groves. It supports more than 81 mammal species, 43 reptile species and 453 bird species across its arid acacia woodlands, thorned bushlands, savannas and wetlands, including beisa oryx, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hippopotamuses, several primate species and endemic birds such as the Somali ostrich and Abyssinian ground hornbill.
