Thy National Park is the first national park in Denmark, in the Thy district of northwest Jutland. It was officially designated on 29 June 2007 and opened to the public on 22 August 2008, and it runs about 55 kilometers along the coast between Hanstholm and Agger Tange, covering some 244 square kilometers. The park protects windy dune coasts and heaths, with rare sandy heathland, bog and small lakes supporting vegetation such as heather and marram grass, and it is a habitat for rare birds including cranes and wood sandpipers. It also holds archaeological remains from the Stone Age through the Viking period, as well as German fortifications from the Second World War. It is administered by the Danish Ministry of the Environment through the Danish Nature Agency.
