Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park

National Park

Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park lies about 430 kilometers north of Adelaide in South Australia, northeast of the town of Hawker. Established on January 1, 1945 and renamed in 2016 to add the Adnyamathanha word Ikara, meaning meeting place, in honor of the traditional owners, the park covers about 934 square kilometers. It contains Wilpena Pound, a sickle-shaped natural amphitheater covering nearly 80 square kilometers beneath the region's highest peak, St Mary Peak, and hosts a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point at Enorama Creek, ratified in 2004, that defines the base of the Ediacaran period in the geologic timescale. Fossils in the park document the emergence of animal life over some 350 million years, and the site remains on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list as part of a joint nomination submitted in 2021.
