Sundarbans National Park is a national park in West Bengal, India, declared on May 4, 1984, forming the core zone of both a tiger reserve and a biosphere reserve within the Indian portion of the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, shared with neighboring Bangladesh. The park is administered by the Directorate of Forests of the Government of West Bengal and protects a critical population of the Bengal tiger uniquely adapted to a tidal mangrove environment, alongside saltwater crocodiles and the Irrawaddy dolphin. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2019. Why are the tigers of the Sundarbans different from tigers elsewhere?
Sundarbans tigers have adapted to an almost amphibious life in the mangroves and can swim long distances.
UNESCO's World Heritage record says the mangrove habitat supports the single largest population of tigers in the world, and that these tigers have adapted to an almost amphibious life. They can swim long distances and feed on fish, crab and water monitor lizards.
