Brecon Beacons National Park

Protected Landscape and Seascape

Brecon Beacons National Park, officially Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, is a protected landscape in Wales named for the Brecon Beacons mountain range at its heart, with the Welsh name Bannau Brycheiniog meaning peaks of the early medieval kingdom of Brycheiniog. Established in 1957 as the third and most recent of the Welsh national parks, it covers about 1,344 square kilometers and draws roughly 4.4 million visitors a year. The park preserves three connected upland areas, the Brecon Beacons and Fforest Fawr in the center, the Black Mountains to the east and the separate Black Mountain to the west, and contains Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales at 886 meters. Its landscape of bare moorland grazed by Welsh mountain ponies and sheep, scattered forestry plantations, and valleys with waterfalls such as Henrhyd Falls reflects centuries of pastoral use rather than untouched wilderness.
