Borneo Rainforest

Rainforests and Tropical Landscapes

The Borneo Rainforest covers much of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, shared among Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, and is considered one of the oldest rainforests on Earth, having existed in some form for tens of millions of years. It holds exceptional biodiversity, including species found nowhere else, such as the Bornean orangutan, and its dense lowland and montane forest is drained by major rivers including the Kapuas and Mahakam. Large-scale logging and conversion to palm oil plantations have significantly reduced its forest cover in recent decades, making it a focus of international conservation efforts.
