Central Belt

Europe

The Central Belt is the area of highest population density in Scotland, with a population estimated between 2.4 and 4.2 million depending on definition, representing roughly 44 to 78 percent of Scotland's population of 5.4 million as of 2019. It takes in major urban centers including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayr, Paisley, East Kilbride, Livingston, and Kilmarnock, and despite its name is not geographically central, sitting instead at Scotland's waist on conventional maps, between the Scottish Highlands to the north and the Southern Uplands to the south. A smaller definition, bounded by the M8, M80, and M9 motorways and stretching from Greenock and Glasgow west to Edinburgh east, held about 2.39 million residents in 2018, while a larger, trapezoid-shaped definition stretching from Helensburgh to Montrose and from Girvan to Dunbar encompassed around 4.28 million people and includes Scotland's major industrial centers. Early twenty-first century predictions suggested Glasgow and Edinburgh, 41 miles apart, could eventually merge into a single megalopolis through continued economic migration, underscoring the region's ongoing importance to Scotland's demographic and economic future.
