The Australasian realm is one of Earth's eight biogeographic realms, coincident with but not, by some definitions, identical to the geographical region of Australasia. It takes in Australia, New Guinea (divided between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia's Papua province), and the eastern Indonesian archipelago, including Sulawesi, the Moluccas, and the Lesser Sunda Islands of Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba, Flores, and Timor, along with Pacific island groups such as the Bismarck Archipelago, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and New Caledonia, with New Zealand and its surrounding islands forming a distinctive sub-region. The realm's long period of biological isolation from other regions has produced a great many unique plants and animals. It is bounded by two dividing lines, the Wallace Line to the west and Lydekker's Line to the east, with the transitional zone between them, known as Wallacea, populated entirely by species that arrived through aerial or oceanic dispersal.
