Americas

Latin America is the vast cultural and linguistic macro-region of the Americas comprising the countries and territories where Spanish, Portuguese or French, the Romance languages descended from Latin, are predominant, spanning Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and South America. Bound together more by colonial history, language and culture than by any single physical boundary, it is home to over 600 million people across dozens of countries and some of the world's most linguistically and ethnically diverse societies.

Which places count as Latin America?

It covers South America; Mexico; Central America and Caribbean islands where a Romance language is spoken.

Latin America includes South America, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean islands where people speak a Romance language. The grouping rests on language and shared history more than on a physical boundary: from the late 15th through the 18th century this large area was conquered and colonized by the Spanish and Portuguese, and in the early 19th century its peoples fought for independence from Spain and Portugal.
