Floodplain

River Basins and Drainage Basins

The flat, low-lying land bordering a river channel that is periodically inundated when the river overflows its banks during high flow, built up over time by the fine sediment such floods deposit. Floodplains support especially fertile soils and have long attracted agriculture and settlement despite the recurring flood risk.
