The Ottawa River flows through the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, taking its name from an Algonquin word for trade that reflects its historic role as the major trade route of eastern Canada. For most of its length it forms the border between the two provinces, and it is both a major tributary of the St. Lawrence River and the longest river in Quebec.
