Karst

Rock Formations and Monoliths

A distinctive terrain type formed by the dissolution of soluble bedrock, chiefly limestone, dolomite or gypsum, producing a landscape riddled with sinkholes, caves, disappearing streams and irregular, often jagged surface topography. Karst landscapes occur wherever soluble rock is exposed to slightly acidic groundwater over a long enough period for dissolution to dominate the terrain's development.
