Cenote

Rock Formations and Monoliths

A natural sinkhole formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, exposing groundwater beneath, common across Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula where the region's karst limestone conceals an extensive network of underground rivers and caves. Cenotes served as a critical fresh-water source for the ancient Maya in a region with no permanent surface rivers.
