San Rafael is a city in the southern part of Mendoza Province, Argentina, and the seat of San Rafael Department, with more than 118,000 inhabitants at the 2010 census. It lies 240 kilometers south of the city of Mendoza and about 990 kilometers from Buenos Aires, on the Diamante River with the Atuel River to its south and Lake Los Reyunos about 20 kilometers to the west. Formally established on April 2, 1805 with the construction of Fort San Rafael del Diamante, the city is now an economic and tourist hub for southern Mendoza Province, built on hydroelectric power and recreation.
