Maceio is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Alagoas, on the Atlantic coast of Brazil's Northeast Region. Its population was about 994,950 in 2025, the 14th largest in Brazil. Founded as a village in 1815 and made state capital in 1839, Maceio is nicknamed the "Brazilian Caribbean" for its tropical coastline between the Mundau Lagoon and the ocean, with an economy that has shifted from sugar and coconut exports toward tourism and chemicals.
