Palmas

Palmas is the capital and largest city of Tocantins state in the North region of Brazil, with about 328,499 residents as of 2025 and a metropolitan population of 471,639. It was founded in 1990 as a planned city built from an agricultural area after Tocantins became a new state under the 1988 Brazilian constitution, with its urban layout modeled on that of Brasilia around a symmetrical central park and a north to south avenue. The city is nicknamed the Ecological Capital and is home to the Federal University of Tocantins and the Lajeado Hydroelectric Power Plant, completed in 2002.
