Porto Velho is the capital of the Brazilian state of Rondonia, in the upper Amazon River basin, with a population of 460,434. Located on the eastern shore of the Madeira River near the border of Rondonia and the state of Amazonas, it is an important trading center for cassiterite, the ore mined for tin, the region's most important economic activity, and also serves as a transportation and communication hub. It is Rondonia's largest city and the largest Brazilian state capital by area.
