La Imperial, or Ciudad Imperial, was a city in what is now the La Araucania Region of Chile, founded on 16 April 1552 by the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and named for the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Established as a diocese in 1563, the city was abandoned on 5 April 1600 after being destroyed during the Mapuche uprising of 1598 in the War of Arauco, and its diocese was suppressed in 1603. Its ruins became known as Antigua Imperial, and the successor town of Carahue, founded on the site in 1882, adopted La Imperial's coat of arms.
