Arauca

Arauca, officially Villa de Santa Barbara de Arauca, is the capital of Arauca Department in eastern Colombia, on the Arauca River, which forms the border with Venezuela. Founded on December 4, 1780, the municipality covers 5,788 square kilometers of flat, flood prone terrain and had a 2018 census population of about 85,585, with roughly 74,195 people in the urban area. The city has been known as the oil capital of Colombia since 1986, though cattle ranching remains a mainstay of its economy alongside petroleum extraction.
