Ibague is the capital of the Tolima department in Colombia, located in the center of the country on the central mountain range of the Colombian Andes, near the Nevado del Tolima. It is one of the most populous cities in Colombia, with a population of about 500,000 in the city and 544,132 across the municipality, making it the eleventh most populous city in the country; it was founded on 14 October 1550 by the Spanish captain Andres Lopez de Galarza. As the capital of Tolima, the city hosts the departmental government, the Departmental Assembly and the Attorney General's Office, and serves as the region's main center for political, economic, administrative, business, art, culture and tourism activity.
