Mocoa is the capital of Putumayo Department in the Amazonia region of Colombia, lying on the fringes of the Andes in the Caqueta River basin and surrounded by Amazon rainforest. Founded in 1551, the municipality had approximately 38,457 residents in 2018, up from about 27,104 in 2005. On March 31, 2017, flooding and mudslides in the city killed more than 254 people.
