Pasto

San Juan de Pasto, generally known as Pasto, is the capital of Narino Department in southern Colombia, set in the Andes at 2,527 meters elevation at the foot of the Galeras volcano. Founded in 1537 and relocated in 1539, the city takes its name from the indigenous people of the area and had a 2018 population of 392,930. Pasto is known for the annual Carnival of Blacks and Whites held each January 2 to 7 and for the pre-Columbian varnishing art of Barniz de Pasto, and it trades heavily with neighboring Ecuador.
