Quibdo

Quibdo is the capital of Choco Department on the Pacific coast of Colombia, sitting on the Atrato River. Founded in 1648 after the Embera people ceded much of their territory to the Spanish Franciscan order, the city grew through 19th century gold and platinum discoveries in the Atrato Valley. The 2018 census recorded 129,237 residents in the municipality, a population that is predominantly Afro-Colombian, and Quibdo is noted for having the highest rainfall of any city its size in South America, with about 8,157 millimeters of rain a year and roughly 84 percent of days recording rainfall.
