Tunja

Tunja is the capital of Boyaca Department in Colombia, set at 2,820 meters elevation in the Andes about 130 kilometers northeast of Bogota. The Spanish city was founded on August 6, 1539 by Captain Gonzalo Suarez Rendon on the site of Hunza, an indigenous Muisca settlement conquered two years earlier. The 2018 census recorded about 172,548 residents, and the city is known for some of the best preserved Muisca architecture, including the Hunzahua Well and the Goranchacha Temple, as well as for being an important educational center with a very low homicide rate.
