Valledupar

Valledupar is the capital of Cesar Department in northeastern Colombia, lying between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serrania del Perija at 168 meters elevation. Founded on January 6, 1550 by the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Santana and named for the indigenous cacique Upar, the city had about 526,238 residents as of 2020, making it the 14th most populous municipality in Colombia. Valledupar is known as the cradle of vallenato music and hosts the annual Vallenato Legend Festival each April, while its economy rests on agriculture, cattle ranching, coal mining and commerce.
