Villavicencio

Villavicencio is the capital of Meta Department in the Orinoquia region of Colombia, about 75 kilometers southeast of Bogota at the foothills of the Andes near the Guatiquia River. Founded on April 6, 1840, the city is nicknamed the Gateway to the Plains for its historical role as the entry point to the Llanos Orientales. The 2018 census recorded 585,858 residents in the municipality, and its economy centers on cattle ranching, agriculture and oil and gas production, alongside its role as the main commercial and university hub of the region.
