Macas

Macas, known as the Emerald of the East, is a city in the Upano River valley of southeastern Ecuador and the capital of Morona Santiago Province. It had a population of about 22,398 at the 2022 census and sits at an elevation of roughly 1,050 meters. First founded in 1538 as Sevilla del Oro and refounded in 1599, it served historically as a Spanish staging point for the colonization of the Amazon and became the province's capital in 1929; today its economy rests on agriculture, livestock and a growing jungle tourism trade.
