Nueva Loja

Nueva Loja, also known as Lago Agrio, is a city in the Ecuadorian Amazon and the capital of Sucumbios Province, near the border with Colombia. It had a population of about 55,627 at the 2022 census and sits at an elevation of roughly 297 meters. The city began in the 1960s as a Texaco oil camp, named after Sour Lake, Texas, and its growth and economy remain tied to oil extraction in the surrounding region, an industry that has also brought environmental degradation to the area.
