Portoviejo

Portoviejo, also known as San Gregorio de Portoviejo, is a city on Ecuador's Pacific coast and the capital of Manabi Province, about 30 kilometers from the sea. It had a population of about 244,129 at the 2022 census, making it the country's eighth largest city, and serves as a major agricultural and economic center for the Portoviejo River valley. Founded by the Spanish captain Francisco Pacheco in 1535, the city was relocated inland in 1628 after Indigenous attacks on its original coastal site.
