Riobamba, officially San Pedro de Riobamba, is the capital of Chimborazo Province in the central Ecuadorian Andes, roughly 200 kilometers south of Quito. It lies in the Chambo River valley at an elevation of about 2,754 meters and had a population of about 177,213 at the 2022 census. The city was founded in 1534 and rebuilt at its present site in 1799 after an earthquake destroyed the original settlement, and it now serves as a regional transport hub on the Pan-American Highway.
