Abancay

Abancay is the capital of Peru's Apurimac Region and of Abancay Province, in the south-central Andes at an elevation of about 2,377 meters. Its name comes from Quechua words meaning either lily or weaving place, and the city is known locally as the Eternal Springtime Valley for its mild year-round climate. Spanish colonists founded it in 1572 as Santiago de los Reyes de Abancay, and it later hosted the Battle of Abancay between the conquistadors Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro. The 2017 census recorded a population of 72,277, and the city's economy includes agriculture, sugar milling, and copper mining.
