Ayacucho

Ayacucho is the capital of Peru's Ayacucho Region and Huamanga Province, in the south-central Andean highlands at an elevation of about 2,761 meters. Spanish colonists founded it in 1540 as San Juan de la Frontera de Huamanga, and Simon Bolivar renamed it Ayacucho in 1825 to commemorate the decisive Battle of Ayacucho in Peru's war of independence; the Quechua name means corner of the dead, after the battle's casualties. The city proper had about 180,766 residents as of 2015, with a metropolitan population of 229,455 across five districts by 2020. Ayacucho is known for 33 colonial-era churches, traditionally said to represent one for each year of the life of Jesus, and for its Holy Week celebrations and folk art traditions.
