Huánuco

Huanuco is the capital of Peru's Huanuco Region and Huanuco District, at an elevation of about 1,880 meters where the Higueras river meets the Huallaga river. Spanish conquistador Gomez de Alvarado founded the city in 1539 on the site of an earlier Inca settlement, and it was relocated to its present site in the Pillco Valley in 1541. The 2017 census recorded a population of 196,627 in a metropolitan area spanning the districts of Huanuco, Amarilis, and Pillco Marca. Huanuco is noted for its mild, sunny climate, sometimes described locally as among the best in the world.
