Puno

Puno is the capital of Peru's Puno Region and Puno Province, on the shore of Lake Titicaca at an elevation of about 3,830 meters in the southern Altiplano. Viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernandez de Castro established the city on November 4, 1668, originally as San Juan Bautista de Puno, capital of Paucarcolla Province, later renamed San Carlos de Puno to honor King Charles II of Spain. The 2017 census recorded a population of 135,288. Puno is known for its colonial-era churches and for its proximity to Lake Titicaca's floating islands, home to the Uros people, which make it a major tourist destination.
