Tumbes

Tumbes is the capital of Peru's Tumbes Region, Tumbes Province, and Tumbes District, on the banks of the Tumbes River in Peru's far northwest near the border with Ecuador, at an elevation of about 6 meters. The area was inhabited before Inca times by a people called the Tumpis, and it grew strategically important under Inca rulers including Pachacuti and Huayna Capac; Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro visited Tumbes in 1528 during his first contact with the Inca Empire. As of 2015 the city had about 111,595 inhabitants. Tumbes lies along the Gulf of Guayaquil together with the town of Zorritos and is served by Cap. FAP Pedro Canga Rodriguez Airport.
