Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay, situated on the southern coast of the country on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata. Founded by Bruno Mauricio de Zabala in 1726, the city-proper population was 1,287,452 at the 2023 census, about 36.8 percent of Uruguay's total population.
