Cumana is the capital city of Sucre State in Venezuela, located 402 kilometers east of Caracas. It was one of the first cities founded by Spain on the American mainland and is the oldest continuously inhabited Hispanic-founded city in South America, having been refounded several times after resistance from the area's indigenous people; the surrounding Sucre municipality, which includes the capital, had a population of 358,919 at the 2011 census with a later estimate of 423,546.
