Angkor was the capital of the Khmer Empire in present day Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, near the Tonle Sap lake, flourishing from the empire's founding in 802 AD, when the monarch Jayavarman II declared himself a universal god-king, until its abandonment around 1431 following an Ayutthayan invasion. Newly identified agricultural systems suggest the surrounding area supported between 750,000 and 1,000,000 people, and a 2007 study determined Angkor was the largest pre-industrial city in the world by surface area, with an urban sprawl connected by elaborate infrastructure covering at least 1,000 square kilometers and containing over a thousand temples, most famously Angkor Wat; the site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
