FAQs

What damaged Dubrovnik and what survives of its old city?

An earthquake in 1667 and armed conflict in the 1990s both damaged it; its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings survive and are being restored.

A severe earthquake in 1667 badly damaged Dubrovnik, yet the city managed to preserve its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. The old city was damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, and it is now the focus of a major restoration programme coordinated by UNESCO.

Since when has Dubrovnik been an important sea power?

Dubrovnik became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. UNESCO describes it as the Pearl of the Adriatic, a name it earned on the Dalmatian coast.
