Antissa

Southern Europe

Antissa was an ancient Greek fortified port city on the island of Lesbos, near Cape Sigrium at the island western point, with a harbour, city walls and an acropolis. It was the birthplace of Terpander, credited with inventing the seven-stringed lyre. Antissa joined Mytilene revolt against Athens in 428 BCE during the Peloponnesian War, fell under a tyranny in the 330s BCE, and was destroyed by Alexander the Great forces in 332 BCE. The Romans destroyed it again around 168 BCE and removed its population to Methymna for having sheltered and supplied the Macedonian admiral Antenor. A small village of the same name survives on the site today, with a population of 823 in 2021.
