Erineus (city)

Southern Europe

Erineus, also called Erineos, was a town and city-state in ancient Doris in Greece, one of four cities of the Doric Tetrapolis alongside Pindus, Cytinium, and Boium, sited below the town of Pindus and probably on the Pindus river; it is placed today within the area of modern Kastellia. The poet Tyrtaeus named Erineus as the original homeland from which the Spartans migrated, and Herodotus likewise traced the Dorians and Macedonians to Pindus, Erineus, and Dryopis. During the First Peloponnesian War, around 458 to 457 BC, Phocians attacked Erineus and neighboring towns, and a Spartan force under Nicomedes came to its defense.
