What is Arab-Norman Palermo?
A UNESCO listing of nine Norman-era monuments built from Byzantine, Islamic and Western traditions.
Arab-Norman Palermo is a group of nine monuments listed by UNESCO as World Heritage in 2015: three churches, three cathedrals, two buildings and a bridge. They were built during the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, from 1130 to 1194, as the result of a combination of different architectural and artistic traditions: Byzantine, Islamic and Western. Their fusion gave life to a unique style, which Italy's national tourism portal calls proof of the fruitful coexistence between people of different origins.
