State

First-level administrative divisions whose own official designation is literally State, the term the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria, India and Australia use, among other federations, for their primary subnational units. Belongs here: any first-level division named State in its own country's usage. Does not belong here: a division called Province, Region or another term even where its role within its own country is functionally similar; the grouping follows the division's own official name, not its administrative weight.
