A soil-forming process typical of arid and semi-arid climates in which limited rainfall is insufficient to leach calcium carbonate fully out of the soil profile, so it accumulates instead as a distinct layer, sometimes hardening into a dense crust known as caliche or calcrete. It is characteristic of the soils found across much of the world's steppe and desert margins.
