A volcanic eruption driven by the violent release of gas-rich, viscous magma that fragments explosively as pressure is suddenly relieved, ejecting ash, pumice and rock high into the atmosphere. Explosive eruptions are typical of magma rich in silica, and the largest can inject enough material into the stratosphere to affect global climate for years.
