A mid-latitude atmospheric circulation cell, roughly between 30 and 60 degrees latitude, that circulates in the opposite sense to the Hadley and polar cells on either side of it and is driven largely by the transfer of energy from traveling mid-latitude storm systems rather than by direct thermal convection. It forms the middle component of the three-cell model of global atmospheric circulation.
