Jet Stream Formation

Atmospheric and Climatic Processes

The concentration of upper-atmosphere winds into narrow, fast-flowing ribbons of air, driven chiefly by the temperature contrast between adjacent air masses and steered by the Earth's rotation. Jet streams, particularly the polar and subtropical jets, strongly influence the path and intensity of surface weather systems across the mid-latitudes.

Quote, Introduction
Jet streams are fast flowing, narrow air currents in the atmosphere. It is the physical mechanism of a teleconnection. The main terrestrial jet streams are located near the altitude of the tropopause and are westerly winds, flowing west to east around the globe.
